2026-09-06   Out of sight, out of mind

When you receive a diagnosis of dementia, the world shifts in quiet, unexpected ways. This reflection is about how relationships change, the silence that sometimes follows, and finding the courage to stay connected when it feels easiest to disappear.

When friends drift away

Since my diagnosis, one of the hardest realisations has been watching people quietly step back. I have noticed friends wash their hands of me, unsettled by the changes in my memory and the pauses as I search for words. I am different now, and that reality will not change, but living with dementia should never mean becoming invisible.

Reaching out through the loneliness

Even on days when you feel lost, weary, or deeply lonely, it is vital to keep reaching out. Keep the human connections alive—visit others and welcome visits in return. Remember always that this diagnosis is not your fault, and you should never be treated as though you chose this path.

A space for your journey
