2026-09-04     And it starts

My name is Paul Whynot. I am 60 years old and living in Bridgewater, Nova Scotia. After enduring a hard-fought battle with sepsis, I received a diagnosis of early-onset dementia. Being newly diagnosed, I know this journey will be my last and my hardest. I feel I have to write things down, so this is where my story begins.

Raw, honest, and reflective

Right now, I feel a wide assortment of emotions—from raw and honest vulnerability to moments that are quiet, gentle, and resilient. Living in Bridgewater, I spend a lot of time on my own, so I often only gauge how things truly are when someone comes by for a visit. Putting my thoughts into words helps me hold on to clarity and make sense of this new reality.

Documenting every step of the path

My goal here is simple: write everything down. Through daily updates, I will share the truth of living with dementia—from simple daily routines and coping with memory changes to navigating doctor appointments, medical visits, and the inevitable emotional highs and lows. It is all part of this chapter, and none of it will be hidden.

You are not walking alone

If you or someone you care about has also just received this diagnosis, the most important message I want to share is that you are not alone. Sadly, there are many of us out there searching for a path forward through the fog. This space is created for all of us to share understanding, find comfort, and lean on one another along the way.

"You are not alone. Sadly there are many of us out there searching for a path."
